Traffic Accident
« on: May 23, 2014, 09:09:34 AM »
I searched the archives but didn't see this one.  If I'm involved in a traffic accident and have to be transported to a hospital, and presuming I'm conscious, can I ask the responsible officer on the scene to take possession of my weapon for me and retrieve it at a later date?  If not what other options to I have available to me to control custody of my weapon because we know its not safe leaving it up to the wrecker drivers who will pillage my car.

KA5CVH,

Yes, you can. In fact, one of the safest routes is to tell the police how they can take possession of your weapon and return it to you. Anytime you have any kind of accident, and you are going to be removed from the scene, you should always alert the officer or officers so that it's whereabouts can be verified at all times.

Great question. Hope that helps.
