Texas Open Carry Law
« on: April 04, 2015, 02:19:46 PM »
So, we keep hearing about the new Texas open carry laws on tv and radio, but we know absolutely nothing about it. Where is the law, when does it go into effect, and where can we find it.

Actually, it is NOT law - yet.  Senate Bill 17, allows open carry by a licensee in a shoulder or belt holster.  CHL instructors will have to add retention instruction to new CHL classes.  They have added signage requirement (30.07) to prohibit OC.  As written, it would not go into effect until Jan 1.

It has passed the senate and was sent to the house.  The house will  probably vote on it w/i 2 weeks.

I don't particularly care for the idea of having to look for another sign,  but at least it would be standardized unlike some other States I have been in.  That is one very good thing about the TX concealed carry law,  notification has be standardized so we know exactly what to look for.  A lot of other states,  any sign at all works.

I am all for open carry.  Would I ever do it?  Not on your life,  why give up the advantage of surprise.  Bad option.

Open carry works in a lot of States,  some of which I spend a fair amount of time in.  The odd thing is,  I don't remember seeing anybody openly carrying a firearm in any of them.  At least not in public.

BigTx171,

There is not a final version ready to be signed into law as of yet. As soon as we have real answers on this front, we will make all of our members aware. Any change in the law will go into effect January 1, 2016.
