How much ammunition is stockpiling?
« on: August 12, 2018, 07:49:16 AM »
I was wondering how much ammunition I can buy at a time and not get..... "Watched"?
Can I buy 8 boxes of 9mm ammunition and not have a problem? 10? 15?

How much ammunition can I have at home before it's considered stockpiling?

Thank you

Completely 'subjective' question and as such also completely UNanswerable..................

some folks would say "2 boxes" - others would say 2 CASES or a whole pallet

You need to decide what's right for You....................

Yes, Thank You.

Figured it was a bit ambiguous but I wasn't sure. I know there is a dollar threshold when withdrawing money from a bank. Wasn't sure how much ammunition might trigger a 'response'.

Headed to East Texas with some friends and I wanted to get 8 boxes before we head out. Thats what brought up the question.
Thank you

Agreed, it is absolutely subjective.
One difference could be in state laws (read them carefully). Another factor is the "feelings" of a jury of 12 of my so-called-peers.
In California, owning one HP bullet is against the law. In Texas, having a few thousand bullets, casings and a bucket of powder makes me a hobbyist.
If you are truly concerned about breaking local laws, I'd definitely recommend to check with a lawyer.
Hope this helps.

Isn't asking a lawyer what this forum is about?  ;)

It surely is - ESPECIALLY when one chooses to use the forum titled:
"Ask the Lawyers"

I am new here but I assume that LawShield lawyers answer only in the one designated forum.
I believe this forum is for general firearm "banter".

Exactly right LDP. I was trying to question knowledgeable people about a something I had on my mind, but didn't consider it a "legal" question.
Not every question is a "legal" question.

Stockpiling ammunition is not a crime in Texas. There are some limits on how much black powder can be stored in your home, but for modern ammunition there are no restrictions. If you want to have 5000 rounds of 9mm for home protection, you are free to do so in Texas. Please note, some other states do have restrictions, so consult an attorney in your state if you have further questions. As far as monitoring is concerned, while it is possible that some government agency could get ahold of your purchase history and excessive amounts of ammunition could “raise some eyebrows,” this is very unlikely. If you do have further legal questions, feel free to post on the “ask the lawyers” tab or call Member services to speak to a independent program attorney.
