Sounds like this homeowner handled the situation perfectly.

It's tragic that a life had to be taken, but it would have been the homeowner's life if he wouldn't have had the knowledge and confidence to defend himself.

I dunno that I would not allow the police in until my lawyer arrived. That can be misconstrued as interfering with an investigation. Just state the basics then hush. Even as a LEO you don't make statements until time has passed and representation has been obtained.
I'm glad him and his family are ok.
