Traveling to NM and Colorado
« on: May 11, 2014, 07:33:54 PM »
My wife and I will be traveling to NM and Colorado with our truck and trailer.  We both hold valid Texas CHLs.  Can we keep the gun in the truck glovebox while traveling and in the trailer while camped in both states?  Can we leave the gun in the truck and/or trailer if they are locked?  What if the gun is not loaded?

Dear 676156,

Both Colorado and New Mexico recognize your Texas CHL, so you will be able to carry concealed as if you were in Texas. This means that you can have a handgun loaded or unloaded in your vehicle or trailer as you see fit.

Keep in mind that Colorado has a high-capacity magazine ban for over 15-shot magazines not lawfully possessed before July 1, 2013. While you may have owned these magazines prior to that date, it would not stop a police officer from arresting you in Colorado, and you would have to go to court in connection with this.

Therefore, our advice is to not take an over 15-shot magazine into Colorado.

Hope that helps.
